Benefits of technology for the screen printing business

I’ve always been a believer that in order to appreciate where you are at, you have to remember where you came from. I can think back when I was just a young boy and I used to like to go to work with my father who owned a small pharmacy. At some point in the afternoon, you would have to take a bathroom break and he would ask me to answer the phone in the event that it would ring. The point I’m trying to make here is that he couldn’t even use the bathroom because he was afraid that he would miss a phone call. It really makes me appreciate the advantages we have today. It is certainly a wonderful time to be in business for oneself with all the advantages that technology has lent itself to. What we take for granted was literally impossible and even unthinkable less than 25 years ago.

When I first started this St. Louis screen printing company there was no such thing as a cellular phone or even a website. I used to go down the street of various office parks and just walk in to introduce myself. I would normally be intercepted by the secretary or receptionist and I would inquire if the business owner is available. Most of the time they would ask me what I was selling so I would have to go into my presentation. I tried to be as brief as I could because I was very aware of the fact that no matter what I had to say or how she received it, she was not the decision-maker and had no authority to use my services are not. In the event that she was kind enough to actually let me talk to the right person, I would then go into my spiel. I would usually begin by telling them that I own a small St. Louis T-shirt printing company that specializes in screen printing and custom embroidery. I just wanted to stop by and ask if you might not need any more embroidery at this particular moment. If so, I would sure like to have an opportunity to at least give you a quote when that time comes. Most of the people that I called on actually used a St. Louis T-shirt printing company other than my own so I would have to come up with some type of creative way in order to create a strong perceived value for them to remember me when that time around eventually arrived. I said if I can’t give you a much stronger value than what you’re currently getting then there is really no reason for you to make any changes. Therefore, I am going to throw in something extra in order to set me apart in order for you to give me a chance. Once I have that opportunity I will make the most of it and hopefully the repeat orders will simply be ongoing.

It’s much easier to deal with a repeat customer that it is someone for the first time because they know you and you know them and confidences have already been established in your ability to get the job correctly and on time.
